The problems and plight of the villages are the criteria for taking up development activities and providing services to the target communities. The activities includes.

  • Building groups and Institutions:-  

             Organizing the poor, the women, disabled and small and marginal farmers in to self help / self affinity groups.

  • Women self Groups

Self help is the keep principles for the sustainable development believing in this SWEET started working with women who are the most marginalized in all the aspects of development. Emphasising on the empowerment as long term strategy sweet help the women of the villages to organize into self help groups by initiating thrift / savings as entry point and binding activity under this so far 50 women self help groups have been promoted and functioning with a corpus of Rs. 3.5 Lakhs. This activity besides building them together, released them from the clutches of money lenders whom they were availing loans/ debits with high interest rates. This also helped them to cultivate the habit of thrift, availing credit with their own money for small interest rates decided try them. They also able to access credit from the Govt. and Banks. This activity enhance their capacity to negotiate with officials, bankers. About 50 groups could avail bank linkages so far.

  • Addressing women issues:

SWEET support women groups to address the issues that effect their lives. The women groups address the family issues like discrimination, wife batting and violence against the women. The social mobilizers appointed for the purpose support this activities. Regular tracing, awareness building and gender sensitisation of both the genders are being conducted at regular intervals. SWEET take support of govt. officials, staff and sister NGO’s and other civil societies. The training for this women are on.

  • Gender Equity.

  • Legal Literacy and legal education

  • Economical activities and home management.

  • Equal wages and economic empowerment.

  • Maintenance and management of institutions.

  • Health issues / problems.

  • Leadership etc.

  • Women needs and strategic entrusts etc.
     

  • Children issues and Support for Education:-

Under this programme SWEET collect data on the educational and enrollments status of the children in its target area and found that the child labour is still prevalent in these areas despite the fact that government implementing the law. To address this issue of child labour SWEET focused on major aspects.

  1. Identification of child labour

  2. Educating the communities on eradication of child labour.

  3. Motivating children through Residential bridge course camps.

  4. Enrolling them in to Primary schools.

Children were Identified in the villages and communities were educated through awareness camps, rallies and debating sessions, women groups are motivated to take part in organising this at village level. Bridge courses are organized and children are admitted in the schools. So far 139 children are admitted in the local schools and continuing to attending the child.  Keeping the right of child to development and participation this programme is being under taken.

  • Programme for physically challenged

Sweet is also facilitating development of physically challenged / disabled people of its target area about 512 persons were promoted to form in to self help groups and doing & thrift and credit activity. They also supported to get railway and train passes for their mobility and do small business for their earnings. Medical certificates are given to them through health and medical officers, so as they can avail the  services and schemes. Dist handicapped welfare officer and SWEET together took up this venture. 50 tricycles have been distributed, and 10 canes were provided to the blind, "YIP" NGO working Ananthapur District supported this. Hearing aids also were given to 10 persons SWEET conduct camps for Identification and regular follow up. Once the cases are Identified they were provided with calipers, crutches and body brace and artificial legs. So far 250 persons were supported under this programme.

SWEET also promote school health programme in which students are informed and educated about disability, care and support for them & preventive measures etc. SWEET activities engaged in supporting govt. sponsored Pulse Polio and other activities conducted by govt. for the support of physically challenged.

  • Watershed development and Management Programme

Under this SWEET has undertaken natural resources development through watershed activities. The activities under this includes.

  1. Soil and moisture conservation works.

  2.  Construction of water harvesting structures

  3. Promotion and development of vegetation and greenery.

  4. Training and community organisation.

This programme has been initiated in the rain shadow areas of Nalgonda district and also that the fluoride effected. Zone of A.P. Samstan Narayanpoor about 12 habitations are being covered through this programme treating an area of 7500 acres. To make people as the Primary stake holders of the Project different trainings and community based organizations are farmed. the CBO’s are trained and organized to implement this programme.

The trainings are focused on

  1.  Institutional functioning and management.

  2.  Management of watershed Programme.

  3.  Best Practices in agriculture.

  4.  Forest and Vegetation development.

  5.  Construction and maintenance of cost effective structures.

The CBOs promoted under this are

  1.  Self help groups ( Men & Women)

  2.  User groups.

  3.  Farmer groups.

  4.  Common Interest groups.

  5.  Village organization and Federation of groups.

The purpose of promoting self help groups is that People the village communities actively participation watershed Programme and take ownership for sustainability and to get long lasting benefit its of the programme. The watershed villages so far 60 user groups and women SHG’s have been promoted besides this farmer groups, women self help group federation and common interest groups were also promoted and functioning. These groups were trained  on self management of their institutions and management natural resources. These self groups also self monitoring their performance and as per the performances the process of strengthening takes place on regular basis.

Training and Capacity Building of Primary Stake holders / CBO’s:-

Functionaries and members of different CBO’s Promoted to manage the watershed development were provided with training inputs in the form of workshops, exposures, orientation sessions and communication events. The thematic areas covered under training and capacity building are

  1.  Water shed visioning.

  2.  Watershed guidelines

  3.  Role of Panchayat

  4.  Role of V.O. , SHG & U.G. in Watershed.

  5.  Planning and management of natural resource.

  6.  Planning for productivity enhancement and lively hoods.

  7.  Self monitoring.

Different resource organizations and persons with subject expertise have resources for the training while SWEET facilitated these trainings. Paraworkers are promoted in these villages under human resource development.

Soil Moisture conservation and Micro Irrigation works:-

The purpose of this activity besides conserving moisture for agriculture development it also enhances the productivity of the soil by adding other methods also and bring additional land in to cultivation.

The works under taken in this activity includes.

  1.  Tank silt application for 200 acres.

  2.  80 Mini Percolation tanks.

  3.  50 Farm ponds.

  4.  20 Sunken Ponds

  5.  15 Recharge wells.

  6.  10 Percolation Tanks.

  7.  5 Check Dams.

Promotion and development of Vegetative cover:-

Besides protecting moisture this activity also promote productivity through which farmers earn more income under this horticulture is taken up in 150 acres also raised nurseries 100000 different species to supply to the villagers and inculcate the habit of raising plants and growing trees.

Livelihood component is another aspect of watershed programme that aimed at poverty minimising through lively hood support programme. This programme is also called watershed plus in which the following components are focused.

  • Capacity building of Primary and Secondary stake holders.

  • Livelihood support

  • Convergence

  • Gender and equity.

Capacity building of Primary Stake holders has undertaken with more focus on not only importing knowledge and skills but creating environment for the roles that each category of stake holder. The Prime aim of this is the target community empower to take decisions and take ownership of programme, so as the programme sustains by itself.

To promote stakes to the poor and land less in the programme. The lands of the small and marginal farmers is being first treated. The land less get wage labour and also financial support is provided to them. An amount of Rs. 23.00 Lakhs is provided 400 poor to get additional income besides wage employment during the days when wage employment is not available. Through this the poor involve in other economic activities and earn incomes that prevent them from migrating to other towns & cities. 2000 acres of land of Poor & Marginal formers have been treated.

Convergence is another area through which success can be attributed with synergy. Under this different govt. departments come together and work in an area by Joining hands to get synergic effect. The departments come together so far are.

  •  Agriculture

  •  Directorate of oil seed research ( DOR, Rajendranagar)

  •  Animal Husbandry.

  •  NAARM (Rajendranagar)

Besides Trainings and technical support and providing breeder seed in collaboration with National Seed Corporation and A.P. Seed Corporation. DOR also provide monitoring support by hand holding though out the agriculture season for castor and redgram.

NAARM Providing information support system to the village by installing Computer, TV, VCD Player, telephone and Internet connection so as the farmers can availed latest and up to date information. Training is also provided to the villagers on information communication technology.

Besides supporting of agriculture development NAARM also provide support to SWEET in other social development activities like health, education and human resource development.

Campaigns:-

Under the programmer of DDS (Deccan Development Society) SWEET organized campaigns on vermicompost on waste product to the farmers in Aitipamula village of Nalgonda Dist.

SWEET has been committed for the development rural communities since its inception with missionary to zeal and integrated development of villages is the main aim of its interventions. In its endeavours SWEET is trying to bring the resources, provide information and communication along with human resources for attaining better results in the areas it works.
